Chinese state media say Netflix’s 3 Body Problem pushes US ‘cultural hegemony’ Nov. 2, 2024, 5:45 AM ET (South China Morning Post)

Liu Cixin (born June 23, 1963, Beijing, China) is a Chinese science-fiction author best known for his Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy of novels. The first novel of the trilogy, The Three-Body Problem (2006), won the 2015 Hugo Award for best novel in its English translation and has sold more than 3 million copies in English and 30 million copies worldwide. Liu stated to The Guardian in 2024 that the novel’s English-language sales alone have exceeded the total sales of all of China’s other literary exports since the country’s founding. A Netflix adaptation, 3 Body Problem, was inspired by the novels and became one of the platform’s highest-budget projects to date.

Biography

Liu Cixin was born in Beijing in 1963. His father was the manager of the Coal Mine Design Institute, and his mother was a teacher at an elementary school. Liu’s father’s family had been torn apart by the Chinese Civil War. Although his paternal grandparents remained ideologically neutral, Liu’s father joined the Communists while one of his uncles fought on the side of the Nationalists. A profile in The New Yorker describes how Liu’s uncle’s association with the Nationalists would later cause problems for his father who, during the Cultural Revolution, “lost his job—having a brother who had fought against the revolution made him politically suspect—and was sent to work in the coal mines of Yangquan, in Shanxi Province, where Liu still lives.”

Liu’s parents sent him to live in Henan province with his grandparents while they worked in the mines. As a child, Liu was fascinated by astronomy and space exploration. His father gave him a copy of Jules Verne’s novel A Journey to the Center of the Earth, which Liu has described as a formative moment in his journey to becoming a science fiction-writer. Other early influences include Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut, George Orwell, and Thomas Pynchon.

Liu enrolled at the North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power in 1981. After graduation, he started work as a computer engineer at the Niangziguan Power Plant. While working at the plant, Liu met his future wife and would write at night after work.

The Three-Body Problem and other works

Following publication of his first novel, the standalone book The Devil’s Bricks, in 2002, Liu published what would become The Three-Body Problem in the science-fiction magazine Science Fiction World. The Three-Body Problem was the first in the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy. The novel follows two main characters across different timelines: Ye Wenjie, a physicist at the secretive Red Coast Base laboratory, and Wang Miao, a nanotechnology researcher investigating a series of scientist suicides. Ye’s father’s death during the Cultural Revolution influences her eventual alignment with an alien species intent on colonizing Earth.

The Three-Body Problem was followed by a second book, The Dark Forest, in 2008, and a third book, Death’s End, in 2010. The first book in the series was published in the United States by Tor Books in 2014, having been translated from Chinese into English by Ken Liu. The translation met with immediate success. Since then, the series has been translated into 26 languages and has become a literary phenomenon. In a 2017 review for the Schwarzman Scholars leadership program at Beijing’s Tsinghua University, Noah Elbot wrote that the trilogy is “credited with bringing Chinese science fiction onto the world stage,” a sentiment echoed by The New York Times in a 2019 profile of Ken Liu.

The first television adaptation of the trilogy was a Chinese series released by Tencent in 2023, titled Three Body. A second season has been announced. In 2024 Netflix released a series based on the trilogy, titled 3 Body Problem. Created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, creators of the Game of Thrones television series, and by Alexander Woo, the series topped the Nielsen charts during its first week of streaming. It was announced in May 2024 that the series had been renewed for a second and a third season.
