NARRATOR: A third of Earth's surface is taken up by vast expanses of land, the continents. Today we divide the world into seven continents: North America and South America are two separate continents linked by an isthmus; across the Atlantic Ocean sits Africa, a large continent straddling the Equator; separated from Africa by the Mediterranean Sea, Europe is, in fact, a peninsula, extending westward from the world's largest continent, Asia; south of Asia lies Oceania, comprising Australia and a large number of islands in the Pacific Ocean; finally, the southern tip of the planet is covered by the frozen ground of Antarctica, the only uninhabited continent.
