Yosemite National Park, National preserve, central California, U.S. Made a national park in 1890, it encompasses 1,189 sq mi (3,080 sq km) in the Sierra Nevada range. Its many features include giant sequoia (redwood) groves with trees thousands of years old, Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Fall (620 ft [189 m]), and huge domes and peaks; the greatest of these is El Capitan, a granite buttress that has an elevation of 7,569 ft (2,307 m) and is some 3,600 ft (1,100 m) above the floor of Yosemite Valley.
