Dame Judi Dench, (born Dec. 9, 1934, York, Yorkshire, Eng.), British actress. She made her stage debut in 1957 as Ophelia in Hamlet, and Shakespearean works became her specialty. She earned eight Olivier Awards for her stage acting. Among her many other notable credits were the TV series A Fine Romance (1981–84) and As Time Goes By (1992–2005) and the films 84 Charing Cross Road (1986), Mrs. Brown (1997)—in which she starred as Queen Victoria—and Shakespeare in Love (1998, Academy Award). Later outstanding films included Iris (2001), Notes on a Scandal (2006), Casino Royale (2006), Philomena (2013), Victoria and Abdul (2017), and Blithe Spirit (2020).
