Daman and Diu, Former union territory, west-coastal India. Area: 43 sq mi (112 sq km). Population: (2011) 242,911. Capital: Daman. It consisted of two widely separated administrative districts on the Arabian Sea north of Mumbai: Daman, on theGujarat coast, and the island of Diu, off the southern coast of Gujarat’s Kathiawar Peninsula. Formerly Portuguese possessions, Daman and Diu were annexed by India, along with Goa, in 1961. Daman and Diu became a union territory when Goa achieved statehood in 1987. In 2020 they were absorbed into the newly created union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The population is predominantly Hindu. Agriculture and fishing are the major economic activities.
