Kolomyya, city, western Ukraine, on the Prut River. Documents first mention the city in 1240. It initially grew as a salt-trading town and over time became an administrative centre. In the 19th century Kolomyya was an important site of Ukrainian cultural life in Galicia. It is now a trading centre for the surrounding area, and it has various light industries. Agricultural machinery is manufactured, and there are paper and brewing concerns. Pop. (2005 est.) 61,210.
