Garanhuns, city, eastern Pernambuco estado (state), northeastern Brazil. The city lies in the Garanhuns Mountains, at 2,841 feet (866 metres) above sea level. It was elevated to city status in 1874. Garanhuns is a trade and manufacturing centre serving the food-producing region of the state’s southeastern area. It is also a popular resort, known for its cool climate and mineral waters. Roads and air service link Garanhuns to Recife, the state capital, about 115 miles (185 km) to the northeast, and to other urban centres in Pernambuco and Alagoas states. Pop. (2010) 129,408.
