Stop AAPI Hate, nonprofit organization that works to protect the civil and human rights of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the United States. It tracks and analyzes acts of violence and discrimination against the AAPI community to understand where disturbances are occurring and who is being targeted. This analysis helps to raise national awareness about racism.
Stop AAPI Hate was formed in 2020 as a coalition of three groups: the Asian American studies department of San Francisco State University; AAPI Equity Alliance, Los Angeles; and Chinese for Affirmative Action, San Francisco. That year violence against the AAPI community was rising. This may have been partly because the virus that causes COVID-19 first emerged in China in 2019, and some Americans unjustly blamed Chinese people—and by extension Asian Americans—for starting and spreading the pandemic. Anti-Asian rhetoric led to racially motivated incidents and crimes against AAPI individuals. These included verbal assaults, beatings, stabbings, and shootings, some of which were fatal.
Stop AAPI Hate sought to document these types of events and introduced a website for individuals to report occurrences of hate—including harassment, bullying, shunning, violence, and discrimination—and to seek guidance. The organization has also endeavoured to educate the public and advocate for policy changes at the local, state, and national levels.
