Pudukkottai, city, southern Tamil Nadu state, southern India. It is located on a level lowland plain just north of the Vellar River, about 30 miles (48 km) south-southeast of Tiruchchirappalli and 35 miles (55 km) southwest of Thanjavur.
Pudukkottai was founded by Raghunath, raja of Tondaimandalam (the region around the ancient port of Tondi on India’s southeastern coast). Industries include peanut (groundnut) oil and sesame oil extraction. The city is connected by railway to Tiruchchirappalli and Thanjavur as well as to Madurai to the southwest. Rice, pulses (legumes), sugarcane, cotton, peanuts, and sesame seeds are grown in the surrounding area. Industries produce textiles and fertilizer; rice milling and sawmilling are also important.
