Banes, city, eastern Cuba. It serves as a commercial centre for the surrounding agricultural district, which mainly produces sugarcane, although bananas and other fruits also are grown. Produce is shipped from the city’s small port, Embarcadero de Banes, which lies on Banes Bay, 3 miles (5 km) to the south. Pop. (2002) 34,452; (2011 est.) 33,800.
