In the early 1800s, before modern matchsticks became widely available, “promethean” matches were used to start fires. They were small tubes of chemically treated paper, each holding a small bead filled with sulfuric acid. When the bead was broken, the paper would catch on fire. As an entertaining stunt, Charles Darwin would light “promethean” matches using his teeth.
