In 1991 a Madison, Wisconsin, warehouse that stored 10 million pounds of government-owned butter went up in flames. Because of the high-fat content, the blaze was essentially one giant grease fire that took eight days to extinguish. Fire trucks became stuck in a gelatinous quagmire of butter and water three feet deep, necessitating mechanics to wade through carrying buckets of diesel for refueling. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured.
