Dr. Peter Boxall is a Senior Lecturer in English literature at the University of Sussex. He has published widely on twentieth-­century fiction and drama. He is also a contributor to 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die (2012), where an earlier version of this Britannica entry first appeared.
