Kim Dae-Jung’s birth date
Much uncertainty has surrounded the date of Kim Dae-Jung’s birth. It has been given in various sources—including Korean encyclopaedias, official records, and databases—as December 3, 1923; January 4, 1924; January 6, 1924; December 3, 1925; and others. December 3, 1925, in particular became a widely cited and repeated date. A variety of explanations have been made for these discrepancies, among them conversions from the lunar calendar that was in use in Korea to the Gregorian calendar and efforts to help Kim avoid Japanese military service at a time when Korea was occupied by Japan. The Kim Dae-Jung Presidential Library and Museum now recognizes January 8, 1924, as his official date of birth.
